Auditioners should prepare a one-minute comic monologue.
Based on the film of the same name, it’s the story of six members of the Women’s Institute who pose for a very tasteful nude calendar to raise money in support of the local hospital. When their fundraiser turns unexpectedly into an international media sensation it changes all their lives.
Women:
Chris* 50—at home in crowds and likes being the center of attention
Annie* 50s—enough edge to be interesting and enough salt not to be too sweet
Cora* 40s—deadpan wit, sings and plays piano
Jessie* late60s/70s—a lover of life and stickler for proper grammar, a teacher
Celia* between 35 & 50—wealthy but down-to-earth
Ruth* 40s-50s—eager-to-please but not a rag doll, finds her strength
Marie 50s—the director of the Women’s Institute which justifies her entire existence
Lady Cravenshire 60s—patronizing and very grand. The actor playing her will double
as Brenda Hulse, any age, who is an expert on broccoli.
Elaine 20s—a make-up artist with sharp edges and very little imagination
Men:
John 50s—Annie’s husband, the lovely man whose death sets the project in motion
Rod 50s—Chris’s husband and John’s friend, a florist who likes a pint and loves his wife
Lawrence late 20s—a shy young photographer with wit and spirit
Liam 20s-30s—a tv director who’d rather be filming something other than commercials
*Indicates the actors who pose for the calendar. The playwright says: “As in the best traditions of vaudevillian fan dances, the art of the play’s nudity lies in what is withheld. The choreography of this sequence is best described as ‘fabulous concealment’. Should we see anything we oughtn’t, the whole scene will deflate like a soufflé on which the oven door has been opened too quickly.” Rehearsals will be closed until we get it right.
